Most people have no trouble finding outdoor activities to do in the Hudson Valley over the summer.  One thing I have been meaning to do was go kayaking on the Hudson.  The Hudson can be very unpredictable, so I was really looking for a guided tour to help me out.  I luckily stumbled across Mountain Valley Guides on Groupon!  They have three locations on the Hudson – Newburgh, Cornwall, and Hastings, and offer a ton of different tours to pick from.

I went on a Saturday morning and launched out of the Cornwall location to join a tour that kayaked around Bannerman’s Island, which was so cool.  The guides helped us with life vests, our paddles, and finding the right size kayak for us.  We didn’t have to bring any gear – everything was supplied.  Definitely brought some sunscreen though, and water and snacks. For the beginners, they went over a quick course on how paddle.  Throughout the tour, there were guides on either side of us making sure we didn’t go astray.  But, since the group was so big, you really could go at your own pace.  We went across the Hudson and over to the island, where then we learned more about the history of the island and what’s happening with it today.  Seeing the castle so close is really a noteworthy sighting – I highly recommend it!  On the way back we got to hop in a jump into the river – which was perfect since it was around 95 degrees that day.  Here are a few pictures from the tour:

File_009A little bit more about Mountain Valley Guides,  they offer a ton of tours from each location.  From the Newburgh location, you can take a trip out to Dennings Point, or take a sunset paddle tour.  Also, they have “Paddles and Pints”, which ends with some craft beer tastings.  Yes please.  From the Cornwall location, this is the Bannermans Island tour location, as well as a sunset paddle, and a Doggie Paddle!  Where you can bring your dog on the kayak with you to a remote beach area and let them play.  You also can go to Little Stony Point, Moodna Marsh, Plum Point, and a public sandbar.  From the Hastings location, you can go to Palisades Cliffs and Sneden’s Landing, along with sunset tours as well.  So many to choose from.  If you go to the main homepage – it lists an entire schedule right there.   I definitely recommend using this group for a guided kayak tour.  Super professional, helpful, and all you need to bring are your arm muscles.
